Welcome to the website of Štramberk Castle – the most important fortified site in the entire Wallachian Kingdom. Štramberk Castle stands on a rocky hill, making it a major landmark – not only for the picturesque town of Štramberk, where the castle occupies the north-western edge of the historic town centre, but throughout the entire Lachian Gate region of the Beskydy mountains.
Built in medieval times, much of the original castle has survived, including the massive castle walls, the area enclosed by the walls, and the reconstructed tower which now offers visitors spectacular panoramas of the town and its surrounding countryside. This tower – known locally as the ‘Trúba’ (meaning ‘tube’ or ‘pipe’) – has become a well-known symbol of the castle, the picturesque town of Štramberk, and the beautiful region that surrounds it.
The castle offers a range of facilities to visitors – refreshments at Dr. Hrstka’s cottage, a range of folk crafts and souvenirs, and of course tickets to the viewing tower itself. At the 40 metre-tall ‘Trúba’ tower, you climb up a wooden staircase which leads to a viewing terrace offering breathtaking panoramic views of the town of Štramberk and its fairy-tale square, the nearby hills of Kotouč and Bílá Hora, the imposing Beskydy range, the hill of Starý Jičín (also with a castle), and the ‘Moravian Gate’ – a broad river valley that forms a natural conduit between Northern and Southern Europe, making it a major trade route for thousands of years. While climbing the staircase, you can pause to admire a fascinating exhibition on the history of the tower – 15 panels displaying photographs and telling the many stories of the castle from the Middle Ages to the present day, plus an idea of how the ‘Trúba’ might look in the future...
